Tile Calculator

Use our free tile calculator to work out exactly how many tiles you need for any room or surface. Enter your measurements below to get instant results, including a recommended waste allowance.

How to Calculate How Many Tiles You Need

This tile calculator converts your millimetre measurements to square metres — the same method used by tilers and DIYers across Australia. Here's how it works:

  1. Measure your space: Measure the length and width of the area in millimetres. For L-shaped or irregular rooms, break the space into rectangles, calculate each section separately, and add the totals together.
  2. Calculate the area: Multiply length by width — the calculator converts your mm measurements to m² automatically. For example, a 4000mm × 5000mm room equals 20m².
  3. Add a waste factor: Always order more tiles than your exact area to account for cuts, breakage, and future repairs.
  4. Calculate boxes required: Divide your total m² (including waste) by the m² coverage per box listed on the product.

Waste Allowance Guide

Layout Type Recommended Waste
Straight / standard layout 10%
Diagonal or complex layout 15%
Herringbone or intricate pattern 30%
Example: A 4000mm × 5000mm room = 20m². Adding 10% waste gives you 22m² (20 × 1.10). If each box covers 1.5m², you need 15 boxes. Always round up when ordering.

This calculator automatically applies the right waste factor based on your chosen layout, so you can order with confidence.
