Engineered Timber
Engineered timber is real timber on top, supported by several layers of strong plywood or composite wood underneath for stability. It has a warm, natural, premium feel – every board is unique because it’s real timber. People choose it when they want the natural beauty and feel of real timber, but with greater stability and less movement than solid hardwood.
- Typically a higher upfront investment, but offers lasting value and timeless appeal
- Needs more care to avoid scratches, dents or water damage
- Not ideal for wet areas (bathrooms, laundries)
Hybrid
Hybrid is a rigid board with a water-resistant composite core, a printed timber-look layer on top, and a soft underlay built in. It has a modern timber-look with a firm, solid feel and a clean, consistent finish. It’s the “no-worries” option – durable, water-resistant, family-friendly and great in most rooms (including kitchens and some laundries).
- Can sound slightly harder underfoot
- Uneven floors may need extra preparation
- Direct sunlight/heat can affect boards over time
Vinyl
Vinyl is a flexible PVC plank or sheet with a printed timber-look layer that bends and adapts well to uneven floors. It’s soft, quiet and comfortable underfoot with a smooth, realistic finish. It’s gentle underfoot, forgiving on imperfect floors, family-friendly, quiet and water-resistant – and individual planks are easy to replace if damaged.
- Softer surface can dent under heavy furniture
- Sharp objects can scratch
- Strong sunlight can fade designs
Laminate
Laminate has a high-density fibreboard (HDF) core with a printed timber-look layer and a strong protective coating. It has a crisp, detailed timber look with a firm, durable feel underfoot. It’s budget-friendly, tough, scratch-resistant and offers great style for the price.
- Not suitable for wet areas (water causes swelling)
- Feels harder underfoot than timber or hybrid
- Individual boards can be trickier to repair
