Modern Bathrooms: 2024’s Ultimate Design Guide

Modern Bathrooms: 2024’s Ultimate Design Guide

16 October 2023

Whether you call a studio apartment home, or a homestead in the bush, one thing’s for certain: Bathrooms are a sacred space. Our little retreat from the outside world. A place for relaxation and rejuvenation.

Yet many of us still treat the bathroom as something entirely utilitarian. You brush your teeth, wash your face, and then rush off to take on the day's many tasks.

Recent trends are showing a change though. More homeowners are opting to bring the spa experience into their homes, creating bathrooms that promote ultimate relaxation through specific design choices. Read on to see what modern bathroom trends are on our radar for 2024.

Green Lush Tones

Glossy green is a timeless look.

Here, the architects over at Arkular have gone with our Marrakech Gloss Tile in olive. Inspired by the iconic zellige tiles perfected in Morocco, our Marrakech range emulates the handmade nature of zellige. This look works well, especially in small to midsize bathrooms. No one tile is exactly alike in texture, giving your space an added sense of depth. Pair these green tones with bronze or gold fixtures for an added luxury spa feel.

Neutral White Tones

We couldn’t make a bathroom ideas guide without including this one! Yes, white is the go-to colour for bathrooms. Is it overdone? Not necessarily. Contemporary textures and designs have transformed the humble white tile into something more.

In this bathroom build by Chrissy van Dreven, white tiles turn this once unassuming bathroom into a spa oasis. Helsinki White Matt Fullbody mosaic tiles are the star of the show.

Create Contrast

One shade is nice. Two shades create an experience.

If you're going for more of an open design in your bathroom renovation, contrasting along hard lines can help create a sense of separation between different elements. And this can all be done without the need for doors or partitions.

In this design, Ausmar Homes creates an inviting bathroom sanctuary using Paloma White Gloss and Moss Green tiles. The look is further complemented by elemental Norr 2.0 Melk Tiles on the floor.

Combining Textures

Why stick to one type of tile for your bathroom? Combining tiles of different sizes and textures can inject more personality into your space.

For this bathroom, Mulberry Manor goes with Materia Soft Mint gloss tiles on the upper wall. This choice invites natural light inside to bounce and play off of every nook and crevice. The lower walls and floors are lined with Norr 2.0 Melk Natural Tiles grounding the ultra-modern design in earthy tones.

Finger-Thin Layers of Mosaics

Japanese impression tiles add extreme detail to small spaces.

The finger-sized mosaic tiles are crafted using a centuries-old glazing technique that originated in Japan. The end result is a unique speckly, crackle shine, adding a depth of colour that can’t be replicated through traditional glazing techniques.

Here, Arcadia Homes uses the Snow Mk2 Mosaic Tile achieving a level of unprecedented detail within this small shower. From shower recess to wall curvature, the tiles work to bring out every architectural element within this bathroom.

Light and Bright

Prefer something a bit more fun? We’re also seeing homeowners experiment with lighter tones alongside glossy white tiles.

Interior Designer, Georgia Neale teams up with M.J. Harris Group for this pretty-in-pink bathroom build. Resort white matt mosaic tiles line the entire wall from vanity to shower. Pink grout gives these porcelain matt tiles just enough pop to bring the space to life.

Want to play around with grout colours? A lighter grout can be balanced out with a matt finish tile. Darker grouts can be more pronounced with a glossy tile finish. Visit any of our stores to mix & match different tile colours and textures, or experiment with your own samples at home, delivered for just $9.95.

Versatile Subway Styles

The subway tile is the definitive tile design. Due to its versatility and ability to work well in all types of household spaces, it remains a popular choice for homeowners who want to exercise their creativity in various colour combinations.

In this bathroom design, dreamy Whoosh Forest gloss tiles inject calming energy into this neutral-toned space. Lining the lower half of the wall only gives much-needed contrast to allow other feature elements of the design to shine.

The Tuscan Terracotta Rebirth

Terracotta has been used since ancient times in pottery, sculpture, and even architecture. Now it’s seeing a revival within interior design.

When starting out to develop the Fragmenti Cotto Range, we looked at how unique terracotta textures could marry with other materials and shapes within our homes. The end result (as you can see above) is a rustic, earthy elegance, unlike other tile textures. For this project in particular, we used Fragmenti Cotto tiles.

Ultra-Luxe Light & Dark Combinations

Darker bathroom elements create luxurious, hotel-like moments in your home. Paired with contrasting lighter tones will balance out those 5-star vibes with a little bit of homely charm.

For this project, we used Costa Nova Beige to highlight the darker elements of this design. The gloss bounces light perfectly off the marble vanity.

Stunning Feature Walls With Earthy Hues

Natural elements and earth tones are not uncommon in outdoor spas and hot springs. Nature invokes calm, and you can bring this sense of relaxation into your bathroom sanctuary as well.

In this project, Novalé Bathrooms pairs two very natural-looking tiles in our range to create a space that oozes wellness. Marrakech Tan brings the walls alive with gorgeous tonal variety. Our Terrazzo Uluru makes the perfect pairing; specks of marble capture and diffuse light throughout the space.
