Dopamine Decor
People are starting to have fun with their interiors, embracing a world of colour, playful accents, unusual shapes, and joyful design. Dopamine decor is all about what makes YOU happy and showcasing it all around your home to be enjoyed by yourself and the people you love. But we’re coming out of a slump of grey and beige filled influencer homes and it can be hard to know where to start when it comes to cultivating your space. So we’re here to help.
Find your colours
Make your built-ins bold with a tiled backing, fascia, or shelves. Give them the appearance of being crafted from stone or marble with all-over tiling, create a Mediterranean look by pairing white paint with terracotta or hand-crafted-look tiles, or simply choose a pattern, colour, or shape that you like and go with it.
Get creative
The beauty of Dopamine Decor is there are no rules. You only want to paint the ceiling? You want all of your doors to be different shades of purple? You don’t want to see any white? The choice is yours. Get creative with your chosen colours; paint the skirting board, paint the windowsill, paint stripes, archways, faux frames. Pick bold tile and match it with your curtains, add unusual door knobs or paint patterns on your kitchen cupboards, choose hot pink candles or paint your bookcase orange. Have fun making your home fun.
Layer
To create a space full of dimension and detail, try to layer your colours with pattern and materials. You could begin with walls in a soft shade of peach and add a green velvet sofa and burnt orange ottoman scattered with patterned cushions in purple and pale lemon, or tile your kitchen in aqua blue with bold orange cabinets and magenta tea towels. Find balance by mixing pastels with highly pigmented shades, opt for white walls with unique details in dramatic colours, or simply let your space evolve organically as you collect the things you love.
Use what you have
You don’t have to get rid of things you already own just because the grey sofa isn’t joyful enough or your coffee table has too many stains. Give the sofa a facelift with a full reupholstering or cover them in a few colourful blankets, and paint, tile, or sand back your coffee table. Add an interesting rug over a plain carpet and find a new space for the bookshelf that doesn’t quite fit. Make use of that old swatch of wallpaper by putting it in a frame or lining a drawer. Dip-dye your curtains or paint a pattern around your light switch. Starting from scratch isn’t necessary.
Instant inspiration
You’ll find everything you need to design a home full of Dopamine Decor within yourself, but getting some inspiration from Pinterest or Instagram can’t hurt. You can also find a ton of ideas in your wardrobe or amongst artworks you already own.
