If you’re looking for something beyond block colours and subtle textures in tiling, we have great news - checkerboard and stripes are trending! Styled together or alone, they exude confidence in design and never fail to create an aesthetic that is modern yet timeless, contemporary yet classic.

Yes the checkerboard is back - though in truth it never really went away as a design choice as it transcends eras with a history that spans centuries. From the temples of ancient Egypt to the villas of ancient Rome, the checkerboard pattern remains iconic and has lasting appeal for the structure and contrast it brings to a space.

The combinations for checkerboard layouts are literally endless. Pair two plain tiles, or a plain and a patterned tile. Pair contrasting colours or two colours from your room’s colour palette that complement each other. Smooth and textured, matt and gloss, squares, diamonds, two colours, three colours, four colours, whatever you like - the limit really is just your imagination!

Get in line

One of the most impactful and unique trends is striped walls and floors - it calls for some bravery sure but if the vision can be realised, it can really transform a small space to be longer or wider or bigger, and draw the eyes in directions that elongate and open up a living space. Think stripes that start at the doorway, run the length of the floor then up the walls in a bathroom, or stripes that create a gorgeous splashback that can also be picked up behind the sink, under cupboards or even on the face of an island bench.

The great appeal of both of these trends is their adaptability and their ability to transform a space thanks to the strength of their visual layout. The layouts can be enhanced by swapping out different colours, patterns or textures and spaces and both checkerboards and stripes elegantly align against cabinetry, fixtures, and in fact other tile designs.
